Texas State Capitol
The granite Texas statehouse stands as a testament to the history of the Lone Star State. Free, guided tours. Mon.-Fri. 8:30-4:30p.m.; Sat. 9:30-3:30p.m.; Sun. noon-3:30 p.m.
Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum
Exhibits chronicle the political life and times of LBJ. The First Lady's Gallery highlights the legacy of Lady Bird Johnson. Collections focus is on six decades of American history and now the Johnson fit into those times. Free admission. Open daily (except Christmas), 9am-5pm.
Enchanted Rock
One of the state's premier rock climbing sites, this massive pink granite dome rises 425 feet above the surrounding terrain; hiking, backpacking, camping, rock climbing, picnicking allowed; daily use fees: $6 per person (age 13 and older)
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Native plant botanical center with nature trails, display gardens, interpretive center and gift shop.
The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum
Features three floors of dynamic exhibits, a special effects Texas Spirit Theater, museum store and café. Austin's only IMAX theatre. Mon.-Sat. 9a.m. - 6p.m.; Sun. 12-6p.m.
Boggy Creek Farm
See the historic farmhouse and view the organic gardens, year-round, Wed. and Sat. from 9am-2pm; fresh produce available.
French Legation Museum
The oldest standing frame structure in Austin served as the diplomatic outpost of France during the days of the Republic of Texas. Restructured detached Creole kitchen. Tues.-Sun. 1-4:15p.m.
George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center
Paying homage to Austin's African-American heritage, the museum features four galleries, a theater, dance studio, museum store and library. Tues., Thurs., 9:30am-8pm; Mon., Wed., Fri., 9:30am-6pm; Sat., 1pm-5pm.
