Apr 30 2025
The Ag Transportation Working Group (ATWG) recently sent a letter to Congress, emphasizing the critical priorities for the reauthorization of surface transportation programs. This letter, endorsed by 39 national agricultural associations, highlights the importance of maintaining and enhancing the efficiency of agricultural transportation to support the sector's unique needs.
The ATWG's key recommendations include:
• Support for the Reauthorization of the Surface Transportation Act: Ensuring continuity in transportation infrastructure funding and development is vital for the agricultural industry.
• Collaboration with Congress and Industry Organizations: The group advocates for equitable funding of the Highway Trust Fund by all types of vehicles, without imposing a vehicle miles travel tax.
• Reforms to the Farm-Related Restricted CDL Program: The ATWG supports online renewals and the use of certain Class A commercial vehicles for eligible agribusinesses, streamlining the licensing process and providing more flexibility.
• Support for Hours of Service (HOS) Legislation: The group calls for the elimination of "planting and harvesting" seasonal provisions and the authorization of a pilot program for farm supply transporters operating within a 200-air mile radius.
• Legislation for Axle Variance: The ATWG supports establishing a 10 percent axle weight variance for dry bulk.
The letter underscores the need for practical and consistent regulations that reflect the unique demands of the agricultural sector. The ATWG's recommendations aim to ensure that agricultural transportation remains efficient, safe, and adaptable to the industry's evolving needs.
